.1 ¶ Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye.
.2  Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.
3  And when I come, whomsoever ye shall approve by your letters, them will I send to bring your liberality unto Jerusalem.
4  And if it be meet [worthwhile] that I go also, they shall go with me.
1 - Concerning the collection It was a time of great hardship in Jerusalem for both Jews and Christians 2co0913, ac0434f, ac0601. Taxes were excessive.
2 - First day of the week ge0105.
2 - Lay by him Or "Set aside regularly at home." Some cite this verse to support the practice of worship on Sunday but nothing is said of either a holy day or a time of worship. It was a matter of efficiency. Here we see the importance of systematic giving – making gifts for the work of God a part of our budget. Then why on Sunday? We don't know but apparently it was the common weekly payday.
  2 - As God hath prospered 2co0812.
.5 ¶ Now I will come unto you, when I shall pass through Macedonia: for I do pass through Macedonia.
.6  And it may be that I will abide, yea, and winter with you, that ye may bring me on my journey whithersoever I go.
7  For I will not see you now by the way; but I trust to tarry a while with you, if the Lord permit.
8  But I will tarry at Ephesus until Pentecost.
9  For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries.
  5 - Macedonia See ac1609.
6 - Bring me "Send me on my way." NASB. ac1503.
  7 - If the Lord permit See ac1821, 1co0419.
9 - Door ... opened Ephesus was the home of goddess Diana (Artemis) ac1927. Paul could do a great work at this strong pagan worship center.
.10 ¶ Now if Timotheus come, see that he may be with you without fear: for he worketh the work of the Lord, as I also do.
11  Let no man therefore despise him: but conduct him forth in peace, that he may come unto me: for I look for him with the brethren.
.12  As touching our brother Apollos, I greatly desired him to come unto you with the brethren: but his will was not at all to come at this time; but he will come when he shall have convenient time.
  10 - Timotheus Or "Timothy." See ac1601 and 1co0417.
12 - Apollos "He says this lest they should suspect that he from jealousy prevented Apollos' coming to them; perhaps they had expressly requested Apollos to be sent to them. Apollos was not at Ephesus when Paul wrote (compare 1Co 16:19; 1:1). Probably Apollos' unwillingness to go to Corinth at this time was because, being aware of the undue admiration of his rhetorical style which led astray many at Corinth, he did not wish to sanction it (1Co 1:12; 3:4). Paul's noble freedom from all selfish jealousy led him to urge Apollos to go; and, on the other hand, Apollos, having heard of the abuse of his name at Corinth to party purposes, perseveringly refused to go. Paul, of course, could not state in his letter particularly these reasons in the existing state of division prevalent there. He calls Apollos "brother" to mark the unity that was between the two." .13 ¶ Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.
14  Let all your things be done with charity.
.15  I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,)
16  That ye submit yourselves unto such, and to every one that helpeth with us, and laboureth.
.17  I am glad of the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus: for that which was lacking on your part they have supplied.
18  For they have refreshed my spirit and yours: therefore acknowledge ye them that are such.
13 - Watch ye Call for an attitude of love and as soldiers on guard duty. Also mt2442, mt2513, mr1335, ac2031, 1th0506.
15 - Firstfruits "the first Achaean converts (compare Ro 16:5). The image is from the first-fruits offered to the Lord (Le 23:10; compare 1Co 15:20). The members of this family had been baptized by Paul himself (1Co 1:16)."
  15 - Addicted Rather "Set themselves." 2Co 8:4.
.19 ¶ The churches of Asia salute you. Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the Lord, with the church that is in their house.
20  All the brethren greet you. Greet ye one another with an holy kiss.
21  The salutation of me Paul with mine own hand.
.22  If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha.
23  The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
24  My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen. <<The first epistle to the Corinthians was written from Philippi by Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus and Timotheus.>>
22 - Anathema Greek for "cursed."
22 - Maranatha Means "O Lord, come." Compare re2220. The similarity between this word and the one before it, both here transliterated from the Greek, may have been intended to emphasize the contrast.
