The high priest in Jesus' time ascended the temple steps with water from the Kidron chanting these words. At the altar the water was poured into a basin. Then it and a basin of wine were poured out into a channel conducting them back to the Kidron. This represented water from the rock in the wilderness. Christ was that rock 1co1004.
