Psalm 40

The new song, blessing in obedience
.
Text
Explanation
A psalm of praise and petition. Some verses describe the Messiah.
.1 ¶ <<To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.>> I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
.2  He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
1 - Patiently That is, with perseverance. Did David arouse a God who didn't care? No. As we continue earnestly in prayer, our faith reaches out to grasp the hand of Omnipotence. We open the channel of blessing. Our attitude changes from a formality to caring very much. The Hebrew idiom used here implies perseverance which strengthens faith. Also see ps03102, lu1803-5.
1 - Inclined It's as if the Lord came close to listen to His child. Compare ps10202, je1723.
2 - Out of an horrible pit This is a promise for those who are depressed or discouraged.
.3  And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.   3 - Song in my mouth Even before we feel like it, singing serious hymns draws us unto the courts of heaven. If you don't have much skill in singing, wait until no one is around, even reading the words with as much tune and rhythm as you can muster will be understood by the Lord and He will lift you up.
.4  Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
.5  Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.
4 - Man From geber, indicating a man in full vigor.
4 -Respecteth Or "turn toward in confidence." Compare ac1034.
5 - Wonderful works Always good reason to remember our Lord and praise His name. Compare ps8901.
.6 ¶ Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.
7  Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,
.8  I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.
6 -Sacrifice ... not desire Doing God's will is key, with the law in the heart.
8 - Delight Our evil nature is a magnet drawing us to believe evil is fun but true happiness is in obedience which gradually becomes our new nature 2ch1706, je3133.
.9. I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest.
.10  I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.
9 - Preached ... congregation He spoke publicly about the faithfulness of God.
10 - Not hid We can learn and go to church to soak in the good things of the Lord but without sharing them with strangers we are like the man who hid his talent. mt2518, or who failed to confess Christ lu1208.
10 - Declared ... salvation We find that Christ is constantly presenting our faithfulness to the father he0725. David wrote before the time of the cross but the truth of this verse is seen in the sanctuary where the priest stands at the altar and the high priest before the ark. As symbolized in the sanctuary, Christ makes us pure and true as we depend on Him, then He, as our link to the Father, presents us before Him!
.11 ¶ Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me.
12  For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me.
11 - Withhold not ... mercies Why might the Lord withhold the mercies? Read is5001,2.
12 - Evils ... iniquities We may be free from the burden of guilt as we live in full commitment to Christ ro0407.
.13  Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me: O LORD, make haste to help me.
14  Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil.
15  Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame that say unto me, Aha, aha.
16  Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The LORD be magnified.

.17  But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.   Poor Perhaps in the sense of helpless against enemies.
