.1 ¶ Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and behold a basket of summer fruit.
2  And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A basket of summer fruit. Then said the LORD unto me, The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass by them any more.
3  And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day, saith the Lord GOD: there shall be many dead bodies in every place; they shall cast them forth with silence.
1 - Summer fruit Fruit is the product or behavior which reveals character mt0717. Amos understood about fruit am0714. From the next verse, we see that the fruit was not good. Jeremiah, perhaps inspired by this statement of Amos, pictures the time when the summer will have passed je0820. In this chapter we see the time beyond summer as a famine v11. Summer is also mentioned in am0315.
2 - End is come The Hebrew words for "end" and for "fruit" are nearly identical in written form and were pronounced the same way in the time of Amos, qetz. (Jon Dybdahl, Bible Amplifier, Hosea-Micah, Pacific Press, 1996, p.134.)
2 - End ... not pass by A sad sitution for Israel. The Lord had often plead with them to seek Him am0504. The summer fruit of their behavior had ripened. They had sealed their doom as the Northern Kingdom.
.4 ¶ Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail,
.5  Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit?
.6  That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; yea, and sell the refuse of the wheat?
Remember that, although only one verse is indicated in the link code, the intended passage is often longer.
4 - Swallow up the needy See the description in pr3014.
5 - New moon The first day of the month (determined by the moon) was a time of worship 1sa2005, 1sa2024, nu2811, 2ki0423 but it, along with the Sabbath, had become a formality is2913, mr0706.
6 - Buy the poor See on am0206.
7  The LORD hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their works.
.8  Shall not the land tremble for this, and every one mourn that dwelleth therein? and it shall rise up wholly as a flood; and it shall be cast out and drowned, as by the flood of Egypt.
.9  And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord GOD, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day:
.10  And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day.
7 - Sworn by the excellency of Jacob His "excellency" of character was seen in his struggle with the Angel of the Lord ge3224. Here it may be seen as the standard of conformity to the character of Christ ep0413. The Lord would "never forget" or ignore the evil behavior.
8 - Land tremble The day of the Lord coming just before the return of Jesus jl0315, mal0405 is often seen as accompanied by physical acts of nature as at the time Our Saviour died mt2751. Compare da1201.
  9 - Sun ... moon lu2125, re0612, jl0202, jl0231.
10 - Mourning of an only son Comparison with the tenth plague on Egypt ex1105.
.11 ¶ Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:
.12  And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.
13  In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst.
14  They that swear by the sin of Samaria, and say, Thy god, O Dan, liveth; and, The manner of Beersheba liveth; even they shall fall, and never rise up again.
11 - Famine A sad scene. This will be after the close of human probation when the Holy Spirit is completely withdrawn from the wicked because they will have rejected it. Compare je1516; re2211
  11 - Bread mt0404.
12 - Wander jn1235. They will want peace but the desire to repent will be gone from them.
13 - Fair virgins and young men These would be the strong ones.
