Psalm 4

An evening prayer before laying down in peace
.
Text
Explanation
This psalm may be read with the previous one which is a "morning prayer."
.1 ¶ <<To the chief Musician on Neginoth, A Psalm of David.>> Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.
.2 O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah.
God of my righteousness Appears only here but compare 1co0130. It is only through Christ that sinful humans may become righteous.
Thou hast enlarged me Literally, "In narrowness You have made large room for me." The gratitude is apparently for more freedom.
Men From 'ish. Could refer to a specific class or group of people while the more common 'adam means "humanity."
How long ... glory into shame David turns to address his enemies and continues through v5. Reference may be to the rebellion of Absalom. See the superscription at the beginning of ps003.
  Leasing Literally, "a lie."
3 But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him.
.4 Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.
.5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD.
The Lord will hear Still addressing his enemies. Confidence from the appeal in v1.
Commune ... be still In quietness, the Holy Spirit speaks to the soul. This is why music with a heavy off-beat is harmful. jb3314ff.
Sacrifices of righteousness Consider sacrifices offered from a sincere person de3319, ps5119. Then the real offering is the righteousness symbolized by the ceremony.
.6 ¶ There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.
.7 Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased.
Shew us any good Where is real happiness? ps01611.
8 I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety. -
