Psalm 2

Threats against the anointed one – Christ
.
Text
Explanation
This the first of several psalms about the Messiah. See also Psalm 22, for example.
.1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
.2  The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,
3  Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
1 - Why The believers, after the death of Christ, remembered this statement ac0423,6.
1 - Heathen Although the nations around David were "heathen" in that they worshipped other gods, the word has the more specific meaning of "nations." See on ps00905.
.4  He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
5  Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.
.6  Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.
4 - Laugh From schaq, also meaning "to rejoice or to mock. This is in contrast to the heathens who are showing their anger (v1). The divine laugh is not to be considered as a response to the amusements around us today. Think of it as the courage and strength of the Lord in comparison to the hopelesness of His enemies. With Him nothing is impossible lu0137, mt1926.
.7  I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
8  Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
.9  Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.
7 - Declare John the Baptist declared Him jn0129 and the Father with the Holy Spirit declared Him mr0111, mt0316.
7 - This day begotten The "Father" and "Son" relationship based on the family helps us understand a little about divinity. It gives us a framework which includes the "begotten son" concept. Christ has always had life jn0101, jn0828, ex0314. Looking at our passage, we ask when Christ inherited the heathen or nations (same Greek word) and also had life confirmed. It was at the resurrection jn2017, mt2818, re1114, ps02407. He was "begotten" then in a new sense – as the Lamb that had been slain re0506. Also see co0118.
8 - Ask The Son received from the Father ro0817.
9 - Rod of iron Christ conquers the wicked at the end of time re1205, re1915.
.10 ¶ Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
11  Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
12  Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
10 - Be wise They needed spiritual wisdom. Compare ps119098.
12 - Kiss the son An oriental custom for superiors 1sa1001. Messiah (Son of God) should be recognized as king jn0523.

Structure

The psalm is divided into four blocks beginning with verses 1, 4, 7, and 10. Verse 1 and the last sentence in verse 12 are contrasts. You can see more comparisons. Aside from the first and last sentences, blocks 1 and 4 are about the kings. Verses 6 to 9, and 12 are clearly about the Messiah.  The psalm could be read by people or groups representing the 6 elements.
